The Study:
The study explores the topic of triage of victims involved in mass casualty incidents and disaster situations when the available resources to treat such patients are very scarce. The research investigates the existing practices and knowledge of the participants, as well as whether the short educational tool we developed to be shared with participants after the initial survey will increase knowledge and comfort with the subject matter immediately after the dissemination of information as well as at 3 months post intervention.
What will be done:
Participants will be directed to a short questionnaire addressing the level of comfort and knowledge they have regarding disaster triage and several multiple-choice questions asking them to triage hypothetical disaster victims. The questionnaire should take no more than 10-15 minutes.
After filling out the initial questionnaire, participants will have access to a short training module describing principles of triage of victims in mass casualty and disaster situations. After completing the training module, participants will be directed to complete a second short questionnaire.
Three months after the original questionnaire, participants will receive an email with a link for a third and final short questionnaire addressing current level of comfort with disaster triage and asking you to triage a few more hypothetical disaster victims.
Benefits of this Study:
Our hope is that you will learn something new about disaster triage and practice some triage scenarios using a simple widely accepted tool.
Risks or discomforts:
No risks or discomforts are anticipated from taking part in this study.
Confidentiality:
Your responses will be kept completely confidential. We will NOT know your identity or IP address when you respond to the Internet survey.
Decision to quit at any time:
Your participation is voluntary; you are free to withdraw your participation from this study at any time. If you do not wish to continue, you can simply leave the website. If you do not click on the "submit" button at the end of the survey, your answers and participation will not be recorded.
How the findings will be used:
The results of the study will be used for scholarly purposes only. We hope to better understand preparedness to perform disaster triage at various levels of training of the medical care provider community, and to better understand the utility of a simple self-administered training tool. The results from the study will be presented in educational settings and at professional conferences.
